Fred Talisman, MFT — In My Own Words
💬 By Referral & Private Consultation

Almost everything you've been told about relationships is wrong.

I've spent fifty years working with couples trying to save their relationships. The advice most of us grew up believing — talk it out, never go to bed angry, honesty is the best policy — is often exactly what pulls people apart.

Swipe through the beliefs I bust most often below, then I'll tell you who actually calls me, and what I think it costs to wait.

🧠 Six Beliefs I Bust Most Often

Swipe through — then keep scrolling.

01
Old Belief
"It takes two people to save a relationship."
✅ What I Teach Instead
It takes one person — to get the skills, bring them back into the relationship, and keep the family together. I've seen it work more times than I can count.
02
Old Belief
"Never go to bed angry. Talk things out when you're upset."
✅ What I Teach Instead
Only communicate when you're both in positive emotion toward each other. Everything else can wait.
03
Old Belief
"Honesty is the best policy."
✅ What I Teach Instead
I call it choice points — honesty filtered through a positive intention, proactive instead of reactive.
04
Old Belief
"Marriage counseling together is the best way to fix things."
✅ What I Teach Instead
Individual work or group coaching — a safe place to learn the skills, without handing your partner new ammunition.
05
Old Belief
"If you love someone, you should make sacrifices for them."
✅ What I Teach Instead
Mutually satisfying agreements — things you both feel good about, so there's nothing to keep score of.
06
Old Belief
"Telling your partner what they did wrong changes their behavior."
✅ What I Teach Instead
Ask for what you want instead, and make it mutual. Same goal, completely different outcome.

🤔 A Question I Hear Often
“How do I know if my relationship is actually over, or if I'm being a fool for still trying?”
My honest answer: if I can't know for sure, I don't think anyone else can either. What I do know — if the person trying to save it gives up, it's definitely over. So don't give up. Get the skills. Then decide.
📞 Who Actually Calls Me

You're probably not the only one who's tried.

💔 Most Often

Someone whose partner has treated them poorly for a long time — bad communication, constant fighting — who's finally had enough, but isn't ready to give up.

💌 Almost As Often

Someone whose partner is already talking about leaving, often after a betrayal. Individual work matters here — couples counseling can feel like "you broke it, you fix it."

🕊️ One Last Try

A couple close to done, giving it one honest shot before they decide for certain.

🌱 Rare, But It Happens

Someone who says "I think I'm the problem, and I want help being a better partner." If that's you, you're already ahead of most people who call.

Before You Wait Any Longer

What I've seen a breakup actually cost.

💔

Emotionally

Grief, loneliness, shame. Friends drift. Family ties strain. If you're raising kids together, they often feel torn between you — and you both lose everyday moments of their growing up.

💰

Financially

Contested splits can run $50,000–$100,000+ in legal fees alone — before the same income has to stretch across two households.

A Session I Remember

I was working with a couple together eight years. In session, she told him: "If we ever break up, my attorney told me you'll have to give me at least thirteen million dollars." That's the scale some of my clients are actually facing.
